The Lamb of God
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
John 1:29 NIV
Have you ever wondered why do Christians wear the cross? Why did Jesus have to die? What is the significance of the blood? I will get into that here.
We see in the verse above that John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God. Why was he called the Lamb of God? Because in the Old Testament they sacrificed an unblemished lamb in order to attone for the sins that the Jewish people committed around that time. Once they sacrificed the lamb they would sprinkle the blood on the alter. Basically meaning if you sacrifice a lamb, your sins will be taken away. It had to be an unblemished lamb meaning a perfect lamb. It’s only through the blood that your sins can be forgiven.
“For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.”
Leviticus 17:11 NIV
But even with the actual lamb in the Old Testament it didn’t deal with the guilt you accumulated when you did things wrong and the lamb doesn’t provide eternal life. Only Jesus can provide eternal life. Jesus said “there is no other way to the father except through me” (John 14:6). That’s why he is called the Lamb of God.
And Jesus was a perfect lamb because he lived a sinless life.
That’s why many Christians say we have been washed in the blood or we revere the blood of Jesus because through his blood we have eternal life and complete forgiveness.
The famous Bible verse John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
God sent Jesus on the cross to die for our sins! Because he loves us. Imagine sending your only son to die for people who didn’t even like you. Wow! Yes he died for our future, past and current sins. Sin meaning missing the mark, because God is perfect and we are not. It is hard for us to meet God’s perfect standard every day that’s why we need a savior.
In the Bible it says the wages of our sins is death. Meaning every time you sin you deserve death. Sin is actually what separates us from God. That’s why when Jesus died on the cross and rose on the third day he conquered death. Because of what he did on the cross we don’t have to worry about being separated from God ever again. In the Bible it says that “nothing can separate us from the love of God”. Now obviously there’s conditions to this, this is only if you put your trust in Jesus. If you believe that he is the son of God, he is Lord and he rose on the 3rd day you will have eternal life, in other ways you will be saved.
Saved? Yes saved from this ratchet world. When Jesus comes back it’s going to be a mess honestly. There’s going to be wars, craziness and a lot of other things. I’m not going to get into all of that right now but read the book of Revelation for yourself. When the end of the world happens Jesus will take you to his kingdom, the kingdom of light. If you believe in him, there will be no kingdom of darkness.
So the cross is powerful because that’s where the work of Christ was complete. That’s why Jesus said “it is finished”. He meant that the work of attonement for the sins of humanity was complete and paid in full. Remember how I said the wages of sin is death? He paid the price for you and me on the cross. This is was his goal and this is exactly why he came on earth, to show us how to live and pay the price for our sins.
I want to clarify, we accept eternal life and an abundant life not by works but through faith. So it’s not anything we do it’s what we believe. It’s a free gift from God. Everyday is truly Christmas because all we have to do is receive it. If it’s anything we did, then we would get the credit for going to heaven and not Jesus and then it makes what Jesus did in the cross futile.
He came to give us a life of abundance now and forever as it says in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Isn’t this good news?! Yes it is. We don’t have to worry about anything today, tomorrow or ever if we put our trust in Jesus. The enemy will try to steal, kill and destroy our life but Jesus came to give us a life of abundance not necessarily in possessions but in joy, peace and love.
If you want to put your trust in Jesus, you can do it right now :)
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:9 NIV
Prayer for salvation
Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins on a cross and rose from the dead. I turn and repent from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. Take me and make me what you want me to be. Make me what you want me to be. I believe that I am born again. I believe you love me and I’m on my way to heaven and will enjoy the journey. I put my trust in you as my Lord and Savior.. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Congratulations! Today is a new day! You are a new creation in Christ Jesus. You might have felt something or you might have felt nothing, but what was planted in you is a seed of faith that will grow into a strong tree if you let it.
The next step for you is to get a Bible. Read the Book of John and the Gospels and get plugged into a local church and a bible study.
